Aji-ishi & its manufactured goods

A lot of stones and their products are displayed crowdedly along the prefectural highway from Mure Town to Aji Town. As mentioned before, Aji-ishi is one of the best types of granite in Japan. Its grains are fine. In addition, the unique mottle called fu can be seen on its surface. The main products are tombstones, garden lanterns, and sculptures. The first picture was taken at a quarry. The other pictures were taken at the Stone Fair 2014, which was held at Sun-Messe, Kagawa.

Not a few works with a sense of fun were displayed at the exhibition hall. This is a hand-carved dousoshin sculpture (center of the photo).  The shape isn’t as sharp as those carved mechanically, but it conveys a simple and harmonious atmosphere due to the light conditions.

Marine products

Another common group of products from the town is marine products. The rapid tide of the Inland Sea promotes an abundance of fish. The area around the peninsula is a good place for coastal fisheries. Not only the fish that live in this area, such as black rockfish and flat fish, but also migratory fish, such as Spanish mackerel, are main targets of the fishing.

The Sunday Morning Market

This market is held every Sunday from 8 a.m. in a fishery facility at Aji Port. The fishermen and their cooperative association’s staffs sell marine products in collaboration. Cuttlefish, octopus, sea bream and sea perch can be seen in the picture below. (Now, it is closed in order to avoid having corona infection.)
